Mindfulness

Mindfulness encompasses the entirety of our experience and existence - body, feelings, mind, spirit. It is a way of living, being, an ongoing meditation, that can be learned through practice and experience.

Mindfulness involves directing our full attention to the present moment: to our inner experience, body, breathing, thoughts, emotions, actions, motivations - while at the same time being fully aware of the world without, other people, our surroundings, and our responses and interactions to and with them. Neither detached nor absorbed - non-attached - we are mindful of our whole experience, witness it all in a non-judgemental, non-evaluative way.

In this way we are enabled to perceive more clearly the true nature of our experience, progressively deepening our understanding and awareness, and so freeing us from unconscious, compulsive action-reaction, freeing us from attachment to and identification with habitual states of mind - thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, emotions, interpretations.

And so new possibilities - new ways of perceiving, experiencing, acting, being - are opened up to us in a constant, ongoing process of transformation.Author
